New Haven Feral Groups | Rehab-A-Cat Main Page | Success Stories | Adoptions
During the summer of 1996, Rehab-A-Cat began working with a colony of stray and feral cats in the State Street commercial area of New Haven. This colony included 15 resident cats and 4 or 5 peripheral cats. By the end of the October, 8 cats were spayed or neutered and returned to the colony, while 7 cats were euthanized because of FIV infections. In addition, 2 sick, young kittens were rescued, nursed back to health, and placed in an adoptive home. Finally, three cats (two shown here) from the group released after neutering were socialized during continued maintenance of the colony, and have since been adopted.
As of this writing, all of the resident cats and two of the peripherals have been trapped, and neutered or euthanized. The two or three peripheral cats who visit the colony only infrequently have yet to be done. The population of cats remaining in the colony is now stable, their health status is much better as a result of vaccinations and nutritional improvement, and five cats are now living in loving homes.
