Site Work Done 2001
JANUARY - APRIL 2001
(nothing in May & June--I'm learning Mac OS X)
1. Submitted 27 pages to Yahoo's new webring administration: 19 accepted, 4 pending, 4 rings disbanded or not accepting more sites. 2. Added SiteMeter counters to about 130 more pages (I am surprised at how many of these pages were being accessed regularly), bringing total to 190 pages with counters. Also added to each of these (except for the music-playing windoids) a link to "Home" and to some other page of mine. 3. Changed the TOC/menu in left panel: added three popup menus (Persons, Ideas, Creations) in a new grouping labeled "short-cut way" to enable direct access of deeply nested pages. Also changed face: Times->Arial. Some pages so accessed needed a little revising to ensure that they fit properly (as to size, links, character, etc.) in the new setting. Not finished: the 3 menus are only supposed to appear when the mouse travels over the words "Great Persons," "Great Ideas," "Great Creations." How to do this??? 4. Improved some old pages (often doubling their size): Charlie Parker Hans Albert Herbert A. Simon Euclid Bach Reference page "Great Links", merely added topics to show what is coming "Friends" page (links now work) "Resume" (brought up to date, replaced old forbidding pix with friendly one from Kazu) "My Belief: An Email Exchange" (added links, brought most links "in house") "Books" (added Virginia Wolff quote, new pix, solar-spectrum dividers, Chomsky much longer text + pix) "What Mean Bach?" "Welcome to Funhouse" Serge Prokofiev (pix and 5 more music pieces) Igor Stravinsky (all 14 sections of the Rite of Spring, link to RealAudio, 2nd pix, Stravinsky gallery page added with 7 pix) Wolfgang J. Mommsen ("Translation of Mommsen"); added Mommsen quote to Hutchins page Cranbrook page Bach page (added links to "Bach's Leipzig" & "Touring Bach country", updated Boyd's book to 3rd ed.) Topitsch page (4x larger) Fermi pages #1 & #2, enhanced both (but they must be combined) Straightened out the music-playing of several pages: they now all operate on the SAME little QuickTime player-window (Hutchins, 900 Great Books, MP3 downloads) 900 Great Books of the Western World (new music selector, 9 pieces) Technical Details About This Site Totally revamped "Secret Doctrines" page: jukebox for playing Bach instead of separate line for each piece. (Not done yet!) 5. Significantly expanded 3 old pages (greatly expanding text, number of pix, links): "Bela Bartok" (incl. new "Bartok & Friends" music-jukebox) "Oswald Spengler" (tripled amount of quoted text, added 3 essays with my formatting) "Hutchins' Univ. of Chicago" (more Hutchins text, more testimonials including A. Nerode's and three more Nobel Prize winners', a big Carl Sagan section, 26 pix, many more links, section on dismantling the College, added G. Steiner quote) 6. Added some new pages: "Famous Graduates of the Hutchins College" "U. of C. Press books on University of Chicago" Enrico Fermi page #2 (unfinished) Severn Darden page (unfinished) Sonata Form page (links) Trip to Vietnam (6 pages) Van Gogh/Debussy pix + music second Van Gogh pix second Kandinsky pix Feynman "The Irrational Origin of Religion", with Holbach quote "Log of Recent Site Work", this page "Bach created music" Collected together the site's 3 Attic red-figure pot pix into one "Greek Vase Paintings" page 3 Tilman Riemenschneider pages, "Last Supper", "Noli me tangere", "St. Matthew" 2 Dominikus Zimmermann pages, "Wieskirche", Wieskirche gallery Raphael's "School of Athens" Igor Stravinsky gallery Carl Milles gallery Kenneth Jonsson page, with Midi/mp3 jukebox for 35 tunes "Serial Music and the 12-Tone Row" 7. Brought "in house" some linked-to pages, because they kept changing their URLs, had bad formatting, looked dull, were very slow, or else had too many typos, and to add counters and links: Topitsch's "Masken" "U of C Marketeers Ditch Tradition" "Must the Univ. of Chicago loosen up?" "Campus Report Online" "Body Count" "Letters to Editors, re curtailing the Core", U. of C. Mag. "Fermi's Question" "Bartok Annotated Bibliography" "Formal Considerations in Bela Bartok's Fourth String Quartet" Bach-country tour (Jan Koster; since this is copyrighted material but extremely slow, I have made a mirror site) Bach's "Leipzig in Pictures" (Arton, also a mirror site) Bach biography (Arton, mirror) Silbermann organs (Arton, mirror) Review by Thomas G. West of Allan Bloom's "Closing of the American Mind" Bertrand Russell 4 essays on separate pages: I formatted, added pix and links. Hutchins's essay "The Tradition of the West" Chicago "Sun-Time" article about Hutchins and Fermi 8. Collected together some links, text, and .html's -- in preparation for several new pages, not yet implemented: new, big, Wolfgang J. Mommsen page bigger Hans Albert page bigger Charlie Parker page Bertrand Russell page Einstein page Kennan page Vietnam additions Quantum Mechanics James Watson (DNA) material for Univ. of Chicago page "The Glass Bead Game" - there is a BIG page having this topic coming! 9. Fixed dozens of broken links, six remain. Added many more internal cross links, e.g., from the pix/music pages, also from there added external links to Web galleries. 10. Set up a whole site for my brother Richard† (10 pages plus midi & mp3) --> www.bayarea.net/~kins/richard 11. Added a re-direct to "Hutchins.html" -- the most common search-engine reference to my University of Chicago page, but which misses the music player and the site-navigation facilities -- so that now instead of that file launching the bare Hutchins page, it launches now a special Hutchins page version containing the whole navigation apparatus on the left and the music. The same thing was done for "BartokStuff.html", the page stored in most search engines. I will do this kind of redirecting soon to "900 Great Books" and "Bach Reference page" as well.
